A workshop by the FIT project of Goethe University

The „Design Your Life: Navigate Your Future“ program offers a dynamic and interactive
approach for international students who want to shape their professional and personal
development actively.

Working in international/academic teams requires flexibility, agility, and, above all,
empathy. Empathy, and thus empathic leadership, requires skills in self-awareness and
self-leadership, shaping one’s life and career. A structured design process can help
develop and grow these skills while enhancing focus and accelerating personal
development.

The Design Your Life process supports participants in finding out what they want and
how to design a satisfying and successful life. By applying and developing the methods
of Design Thinking combined with fundamentals from Psychology and self-leadership,
this program aims to learn and use tools and techniques to improve self-awareness,
recognize one’s own behavioural patterns and values, reflect on and expand one’s
context of experience to make self-efficacy a reality in the future; building on this, to
explore, prototype and test new options for a successful future.

Scheduled throughout January 2024, this program includes three virtual sessions, held
every Friday for three hours, culminating in a fourth in-person session where students
will present the results of their journey.

Overview of the Program:

Virtual Sessions:
These will be held every Friday starting November 15th, 2024,
and ending December 6th, 2024. The four interactive online sessions are 3.5
hours in duration. The time will be spent to delve into Design Your Life, a proven
career and life planning methodology developed at Stanford University. These
sessions are designed to guide students in designing meaningful paths in their
personal and professional lives.

Session Content:
Week 1: Introduction to the Design Your Life framework — Understand
core concepts and begin the self-assessment process.
Week 2: Ideation — Generating life and career options.
Week 3: Prototyping — Turning ideas into prototypes that allow a first
experience of the future.
Week 4: Final In-Person Meeting: This session will be an interactive
presentation. Gerhard Helmeister (Student Counselor/PBS and head of
“Goethe Life Design Lab”) will host the event off-campus. Students will
share the results of their life prototypes and insights gained from the
journey, showcasing their prospective life designs. This final gathering is a
presentation day and a celebration of the students’ strategic foresight into
their futures.

Additional Support:
Throughout the program, participants will have access to the
instructor for individual counselling to personalize their experience further and
address unique challenges. Enrolling in the course will give students access to
additional tools and material to aid them during and beyond the course.
This program is tailored to accommodate a broad spectrum of international students,
recognizing the varied challenges and stress levels faced by today’s students. Whether
reentering academic life or seeking to redefine their future trajectories, „Design Your
Life: Navigate Your Future“ empowers students to forge resilient and fulfilling paths
forward.
