A Practical Career Design Workshop for International Students

During their studies, many students reach a point where questions about the future naturally begin to surface. Some already have a clear direction in mind, while others are still exploring different possibilities. Both are part of the process of building a career.

This workshop creates space to step back from the day-to-day demands of university and think more intentionally about the kind of career and life you want to build.

Drawing on the Design Your Life methodology developed at Stanford University, combined with insights from positive psychology, career development, and design thinking, the workshop introduces a practical design process for exploring and shaping your future. Instead of trying to determine one perfect career path, students learn how to approach their future as something that can be explored, designed, and gradually tested.

Throughout the workshop, participants reflect on their motivations and strengths, explore different possible career directions, and design small experiments that can help them move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Each session provides practical tools that can immediately be applied to career exploration. Sessions can be attended individually, but together they form a structured process for designing and testing possible future paths.

The Career Design Process

The workshop follows a four-step career design process:

  1. Align what matters to you
  2. Understand your strengths and motivations
  3. Explore multiple career paths
  4. Test ideas through small experiments

Each session introduces practical tools that can be immediately applied to your career exploration.

Sessions can be attended individually, but together they form a complete process for designing and testing future career paths.

Workshop Structure

The workshop consists of four interactive evening sessions, each focused on a specific step in designing your future.

Each session combines short inputs, guided exercises, and small group conversations where students learn from the experiences of other international students navigating similar questions.

Students leave each session with a concrete outcome they can immediately apply.

Bonus: Career Design Accelerator Lab

Students who participate in the full workshop series receive access to the Career Design Lab, an optional follow-up space designed to support students as they begin testing the ideas and experiments developed during the workshop.

Designing a career path rarely happens in a single moment. It is a process that unfolds through conversations, small experiments, and gradual learning.

Throughout the remainder of the semester, participants will be invited to join informal Career Design Lab sessions, where they can:

  • share progress on the career experiments they designed
  • discuss challenges in navigating the German job market
  • exchange ideas and opportunities with peers
  • receive feedback and guidance from the instructor

These sessions create a collaborative space where students can continue exploring their future while learning from the experiences of others.

What You Will Gain

Participants will:

  • develop a clearer understanding of possible career paths in Germany
  • identify personal strengths and motivations
  • generate multiple career directions to explore
  • design practical experiments to approach your desired career risk free

By the end of the workshop, students will not only have new insights but also specific next steps they can take immediately.
