Workshop of the project „Prepare“ of the International Office. Trainer: Andrew Cerniski.

Content:
Whether evaluating the results of a political debate, taking a stand for or against a particular COVID policy, disputing a grade for a course or making a case for a vacation in the mountains instead of at the sea, we encounter argumentation in all areas of life. The actual verbal exchange is, however, only the last step in a process. To argue well, we need first to identify what we ourselves honestly find true and then to arrange the grounds for our opinion in a way which effectively convinces a listener. The ability to recognize and to put forth views which are both compelling and sound is crucial to fending off flawed, potentially damaging ideas at work and in private life and helps us promote ones more valid and sustainable.

The aim of our workshop is to examine key aspects of argumentation so as to enable you to assure first yourself and then others about the truth, worth or good sense of a concept, thing or proposal. We’ll break arguments down into their component parts in order to highlight areas to focus on when searching for possible weaknesses in your own reasoning as well as in that of others. In breakout rooms, you’ll actively practice the principles we discuss in debates with fellow workshop participants. The workshop is held in English and requires an intermediate level of English or higher.

About the trainer: Andrew has many years of experience in training argumentative and critical thinking skills and has held courses on the subject for several universities. He holds degrees in English literature, creative writing and business administration.
